Carrier preparation starts at home before a journey is urgent. Practice takes different amounts of time for different cats and should never delay necessary veterinary care.
Check comfort and access
Your cat should be able to stand, turn, sit, and lie comfortably. Compare ventilation, secure closures, cleaning access, and removable-top designs. Give each cat their own carrier. Leave it accessible with familiar bedding and reward comfortable approach before progressing to short door closing and gentle movement. AAHA’s carrier guidance explains gradual preparation.
Rehearse departure
Set out keys and records first. Support the carrier’s base and keep it level. A light cover may help some cats, but must not block airflow. Keep your cat inside the closed carrier throughout travel. FelineVMA’s visiting guide provides practical preparation.
Check the vehicle position
FelineVMA recommends securing the carrier on the vehicle floor behind a front seat. Its guidance limits seat-belt use to carriers that are crash-test certified. Check the exact carrier’s instructions and your vehicle arrangement. Read the transport position statement.
Keep practice trips short and calm once earlier steps are comfortable. Never leave your cat alone in a parked vehicle. Repeated distress or sickness needs an individual veterinary plan; a calming-product purchase is not a substitute. ASPCA vehicle-safety guidance explains parked-car risks.
